Gold Hits a Three-Month High at $4,677, Then Pulls Back
Analysis of August 25, 2026, with follow-up through September 18. Updated October 5, 2026. · Written by Svetoslav Grigorov
How to read this page: the main analysis covers the August 25, 2026 session — the date in the URL. Between September 2 and 19 the article was updated; those updates are now gathered at the end, in the follow-up section, ordered by the date of each data point and with its source. No verified figure has been removed. A correction note at the end explains one figure that had been assigned the wrong date.
VERIFIED Gold (XAU/USD) hit an intraday high of $4,677.19 an ounce on August 25, 2026, its highest level since mid-May, before pulling back to $4,627.36 (down $18.55, -0.40%) later the same session, according to Yahoo Finance.
VERIFIED August is on track to be gold's best month since September 1999, up more than 15% so far, according to the same source. Even so, the metal remains well below its all-time high of $5,597.23, reached on January 29, 2026, per RoboForex.
What this did not mean
HYPOTHESIS A pullback right after a three-month high does not by itself say whether August's rally continues or ends here. Gold has already corrected more than 25% from its all-time high at other points in 2026, and one down session is not the same thing as a trend change.

Data published between September 1 and 18, 2026, each with its source. They are not all the same kind of figure: some are spot closes, some are mid-session quotes and one is a futures opening price, so they should not be read as a uniform series.

What moved gold in September
The explanations for each move are market readings attributed to the source cited (HYPOTHESIS), not causal links verified by this site. The mechanism behind almost all of them is the same: when interest rates or Treasury yields rise, so does the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset like gold.
Rate-hike expectations. HYPOTHESIS The September 1 drop, which took gold to its lowest level since August 19 (Trading Economics), was attributed to remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh that had led markets to price in roughly a 70% chance of a September hike (Rio Times). On September 4, the August jobs report showed nonfarm payrolls rising by 162,000, well above the roughly 56,000 the consensus expected, with unemployment holding at 4.1%, reinforcing that expectation and pushing the dollar and Treasury yields higher (CNBC). On September 15, with the 10-year Treasury yield approaching 5%, its highest since 2007, and the Fed's two-day meeting just under way, CME Group's FedWatch tool put the odds of a quarter-point hike at 92.5% (Yahoo Finance).
Oil and geopolitics. HYPOTHESIS On September 3 the gain was attributed to hopes that the military escalation with Iran would stay brief, after the US president called the latest strike "very heavy" but suggested it would not take "too long" (Yahoo Finance; that day's price per CNBC). On September 14, by contrast, the drop was attributed to the same attacks that sent oil higher: the Saudi East-West pipeline remained shut after fresh weekend strikes, and a vessel was hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, leading more analysts to expect a rate hike that week (Yahoo Finance, USAGOLD, Eastern Herald).
VERIFIED On September 15 spot gold closed at $4,263.19 an ounce (down $53.15, -1.23%), its lowest level in six weeks, and the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose to 99.57, its highest since September 3, lifted by the jump in oil prices after the Saudi pipeline shutdown, according to USAGOLD.
Fed day (September 16). VERIFIED The Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% in a unanimous 12-0 vote — the first hike since July 2023 — and the median projection of its members (the "dot plot") points to another 25-basis-point hike before year-end, according to Fox Business (details of the decision in our S&P 500 analysis). Gold had climbed more than 1% to a session high of $4,365.57 before the decision was announced, and was trading at $4,240.10 (-1.2%) as of 3:10 p.m. ET, according to CNBC. HYPOTHESIS The same source attributed the reversal to the signal that 16 of the Fed's 18 policymakers expect at least one more increase before year-end, which strengthened the dollar. Gold and silver had risen ahead of the meeting, pricing in a hike the market considered a near-certainty, and gave back as much as 1.3% after Warsh reaffirmed that inflation remains a threat (GoldSilver.com).
The rebound (September 17 and 18). VERIFIED Spot gold closed at about $4,346 an ounce (+1.74%) on September 17 (Rio Times Online) and at $4,380.01 on the 18th (up 0.77% on the day and 0.73% on the week), almost exactly at its 50-day moving average ($4,381.74) but still below its 200-day average ($4,475.45), according to Rio Times Online. HYPOTHESIS The rebound was attributed to falling oil prices, which eased inflation concerns, and to Treasury yields easing back after the spike triggered by the rate hike (Yahoo Finance).
CALCULATED From the $4,627.36 cited after the August 25 pullback to the September 18 close ($4,380.01), gold changed by −5.35%: (4,380.01 − 4,627.36) / 4,627.36 × 100. It was still 21.75% below its $5,597.23 all-time high. These are Claromercado's own calculations from figures on this page; the source does not state that $4,627.36 was the official August 25 close.
For what happened next: gold as of September 29 and the third-quarter review.
Correction note (October 5, 2026): until this date, the page presented $4,346 (+1.74%) as a "first figure" for the September 18 close. According to the source itself (Rio Times Online, published on the morning of September 18), it is the close of Thursday, September 17. The September 18 close was $4,380.01, and the two figures are consistent: 4,346 × 1.0077 ≈ 4,379.5.
