Brent crude falls to $90.21 a barrel, down 4.15% in a day

Updated August 25, 2026.

VERIFIED Brent crude traded at $90.21 a barrel at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time on August 25, 2026, $3.91 below the previous morning's level (-4.15%), according to Fortune. Compared with a month ago ($98.69), the barrel is down 8.59%; compared with a year ago ($68.82), it is still up 31.08%.

What is behind the drop

HYPOTHESIS Several outlets tie the pullback to oil's so-called "war premium" unwinding, with less tension around U.S. sanctions on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz than earlier in the month. That is the explanation circulating this week, not something this site has independently verified, according to CNBC.

What this does not mean

HYPOTHESIS A one-day drop does not by itself say whether last month's downward trend will continue. Brent remains almost a third more expensive than a year ago, so the recent pullback is a correction within a still-high level, not necessarily the start of something else.
