S&P 500 at 7,677 After a Record-Setting August

Analysis of August 25, 2026, with follow-up through September 18. Updated October 5, 2026. · Written by Svetoslav Grigorov

How to read this page: the main analysis covers the August 25, 2026 session — the date in the URL. Between September 2 and 19 the article was updated with each day's close; those updates are now gathered at the end, in the follow-up section, each with its date and source. No verified figure has been removed.

VERIFIED The S&P 500 closed the August 25, 2026 session at 7,677.28 points, up 24.42 points (+0.32%) from the previous close, according to Yahoo Finance's market recap and the Associated Press report carried by kvue.com.

VERIFIED That close came after the index broke above 7,800 for the first time in its history, with a record close of 7,798.99 on August 13, 2026 — its 27th record close of the year — driven by softer-than-expected inflation data, according to HNGN.

What was behind the record-setting August

HYPOTHESIS Several market reports credited August's rally to July CPI and PPI readings that came in below forecasts and to expectations that the Federal Reserve would hold rates in September. That was the prevailing reading that week, not a fact independently verified by this site.

HYPOTHESIS Much of that week's attention was on Nvidia's quarterly results, due on August 26, 2026 after the close (see our analysis of Nvidia's results), and on whether they would confirm the growth already priced into AI-linked stocks.

What this did NOT mean

HYPOTHESIS A string of record closes did not guarantee the trend would continue: a single earnings report, a jobs number, an oil spike or a shift in tone from the Federal Reserve can move the market the other way. A strong August is not the same as a multi-month trend. Over the following three weeks the index did not set a new record: the highest close in the follow-up was 7,718.60 points, on September 4 (see the table).

Reported driver and sources for each session

VERIFIED The Nasdaq Composite, in the same sessions and per the same sources as the table: 25,978.42 points on September 16 (−3.15 points, essentially flat), 26,418.30 on the 17th (+439.87 points, +1.7%) and 26,522.55 on the 18th (+0.39%).

VERIFIED On September 16, 2026 the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75%–4.00%, in a unanimous 12–0 vote — the first hike since July 2023, under Chair Kevin Warsh. The median projection of FOMC members (the "dot plot") pointed to another 25-basis-point hike before year-end, according to Fox Business. Live coverage that afternoon (Yahoo Finance) described a choppy reaction during the session, ahead of the lower close shown in the table.

CALCULATED From the August 25 close (7,677.28) to the September 18 close (7,650.50), the S&P 500 changed by −0.35%: (7,650.50 − 7,677.28) / 7,677.28 × 100. From the August 13 record (7,798.99) the decline was −1.90%: (7,650.50 − 7,798.99) / 7,798.99 × 100. These are Claromercado's own calculations from closes verified on this page, not figures published as such by any source.

HYPOTHESIS Taken together, the reports cited attribute the period's losing sessions mainly to two factors: rising Treasury yields (which touched 5% ahead of the Fed meeting) and expensive oil amid the US-Iran escalation, with the September 16 hike as the most direct trigger of that day's drop. These are readings attributed to each session's source, not a causal link verified by this site. For the Dow Jones over the same period, which had its worst week since March, see our Dow Jones analysis; for the quarter-end picture, the S&P 500 as of September 29.

Correction note (September 4): a reading published that day attributed a gain linked to Nvidia's purchase of Hugging Face to that session; it actually described the previous session and was corrected the same day.
